Preparing your Heart

One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.”

‭‭Psalm‬ ‭27‬:‭4‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Preparing your Heart for Caregiving

Picture yourself as married with two young children, balancing a challenging job. Suddenly, your mother receives a terminal diagnosis and is unable to care for herself. She requires constant support, and as her only child, you are her closest relative. What is your first course of action?

You may begin to ask yourself a series of questions.

Am I equipped to handle this new responsibility?

Do I want to become a caregiver?

Would it be better to hire a caregiver?

If I say yes to becoming the caregiver, what support will I have?

How will I juggle this new responsibility along with my life?

What do I need to do in order to get prepared?

This is my story. Im married with adult daughters, and grandchildren.  However caring for my mother,  there was no hesitation in assuming this responsibility.  I just really had to prepare my mind and my heart.

My mother’s illness became terminal after several rounds of chemotherapy. A combination of her age and the stress of chemotherapy. My mom’s health drastically declined. After 3 years, my  mom needed daily care in basic things, i.e., walking, bathing, medication, etc.

My mom and I have a great relationship. I love her. Caring for her is a honor and a privilege. I am grateful that God has allowed me this time. Being a caregiver for a family member with a chronic or terminal illness can be quite challenging. It may be difficult to fully embrace this responsibility, especially while managing your own life. Yet, a sense of obligation drives you to take it on. I strongly believe that it's essential to prepare your heart for this important task.

Preparing your heart for caregiving involves a deeper connection. Cultivating a relationship with God is essential. Engaging in prayer and reading the Bible is crucial. Your love for your loved one is profound, and caring for them properly requires an elevated sense of love, strength, and wisdom. Therefore, praying and seeking God is vital in getting your heart ready for this journey.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the lord and lean not to your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your path.

Trusting God throughout the journey is essential. There will be days when you feel overwhelmed, guilt fearful, or even angry. It's important to process these emotions and turn to God in prayer. You should also include a therapist into the mix to help with coping skills.  A support group is also very beneficial.  If you are a overthinker like I am, it may take time to release those feelings due to your busy mind. I’ve found journaling to be particularly helpful as well. Additionally, you need to summon the strength to remain present; you can't change the past, nor can you predict the future. Recognizing that God is in control can ease the way forward, so lean not on your own understanding. Let go of the need to know or control everything. Remember, training your mind and heart to trust God is a vital part of this journey. Trust in God, and avoid relying solely on your own understanding. The next step, is acknowledgment. acknowledging God.

All my life you have been faithful
All of my life you have been so good
With every breath that I able
I will sing of the goodness of God

This is some of the lyrics from one of my favorite songs by Cee Cee Winnan

I play this song on a regular , it reminds as I reflect on on God and all the good.

Let's take a moment to revisit your mindset. Another powerful scripture is

Philippians 4:8

Finally, believers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable and worthy of respect, whatever is right and confirmed by God’s word, whatever is pure and wholesome, whatever is lovely and brings peace, whatever is admirable and of good repute; if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think continually on these things [center your mind on them, and implant them in your heart].

Our minds hold immense power, and just as we dedicate time to train our bodies, we must also nurture our minds. Philippians 4:8 reminds us to focus on whatever is honorable, lovely, admirable, and excellent—let these thoughts fill your heart. This is an opportunity to truly explore and reflect on the wonderful things that God has accomplished in your life that are lovely, admirable, and excellent, including the cherished moments with your loved ones. Concentrate on God’s glory during these experiences.

In sum, place your trust in God, refrain from relying solely on your own understanding, and acknowledge Him in everything you do. The next step is that He will guide your path. Essentially, envision God as your GPS, assisting you throughout your journey.
