Superhero Strength
The Lord is my strength and my shield, my heart trust in him, and he helps me.
Psalm 28:7
Have you ever felt like you're facing a giant task that's just too big to tackle? Maybe you thought you weren't tough enough, smart enough, or sharp enough to handle it. As a kid, my mom and grandma were real-life superheroes. They fearlessly took on any challenge thrown their way. Grandma would scoop up a mouse like it was no big deal and give it a watery send-off in the loo. With that same boldness, she'd stand up to anyone who dared disrespect her. Meanwhile, Mom would single-handedly move hefty furniture around the house, not caring that it weighed a ton. She'd also show those local troublemakers the door when they tried to linger outside her shop. Looks like I come from a long line of unstoppable wonder women
I discovered a hidden power within me. After my mom's second hospital stint, I faced the tough choice of moving her to a nursing home for proper care. Despite my husband's reservations due to past experiences, I trusted my gut and declared she'd be fine. With my faith activated (Holy Spirit style!), I promised to be by her side every single day. Ready to go to battle if needed, I vowed to protect her. After 13 days in the nursing home, she returned home healthier. Still, her weakness worried me about meeting her needs adequately.
My superhero mom wasn't quite back to her usual self post-hospital stay. She needed a helping hand for daily tasks, becoming our quirky new normal. Shoutout to my amazing family for being our rock stars! The shower saga was a real-life Rubik's cube. Daily sponge baths were on repeat, but deep down, we both knew a shower was the real MVP. Ah, the magic of a good shower – my daily escape and chat session with the big man upstairs. Naked prayer time? Sure, why not – God knows us inside and out, right? Wrangling Mom into the shower was like a mission impossible at first. Step one: gather the right gear...
The Amazon shower chair turned out to be a flop, so I went on a mission to hunt down the perfect fit for my mom. At first, my daughter Nika came to the rescue with the shower duties, but then our schedules turned into a circus act. Juggling work-from-home life with one daughter working late and the other on baby duty, the situation became a real head-scratcher. I ruled out roping in my husband for help, not because he's a superhero but because, well, he's a guy. So, I had to crack the code and figure out a one-woman plan to get my dear mom showered and spruced up.
It’s showtime for Operation Shower Mom! Armed with prayers and determination, I geared up to tackle the challenge solo. When I finally braved the day to announce, "Shower time, Mom!" she was all in, ready to conquer. And guess what? Smooth sailing all the way! Thank the heavens above for a successful mission! I felt like a Superhero
Taking a look back at Psalm 28:7, the Lord is my strength and my shield, and my heart trust in him, and he helps me. This passage reminds me that God is my strength and shield, when I am weak, he is my strength.
Caregiver Tip: As a caregiver, remember as you take care of your loved one, remember your own selfcare too. Keeping up on your water intake is vital. Many times I have forgotten and have suffered because of it. I can tell when my body is in need of water. I get aches in my back, my digestive system is out of wack. Have a water bottle with you at all times ensures that you are getting in your water in take through out the day. It is a part of your self care.
According to the Center of Disease Control, staying hydrated helps you maintain a normal body temperature; lubricants your joints; protects your spine; and keeps your digestive system regular. By the way the link below shows the shower chair that benefited my mom. It had a unique feature that a regular shower chair does not have, the chair slides.
